Commissioned by the City of Onkaparinga
Artists Brief: The City of Onkaparinga (ONK) has low numbers of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants residing in the area for several reasons. The majority of migrants in the City are from the United Kingdom and over 96% of people residing in ONK speak English either as a first language or very proficiently.
As there are so few people from diverse cultural backgrounds living in the City people from these backgrounds experience high levels of isolation as they do not have their own cultural communities to connect with and often do not speak English. Refugees and asylum seekers residing in the area find it difficult to gain employment, find suitable accommodation, to make friends and connect socially. ONK is a dominantly Caucasian community in which refugees and asylum seekers find it difficult to feel a part of. By raising awareness that refugees and asylum seekers live here and are part of our community we aim to shift community attitudes towards acceptance and inclusion.
